Day 5

Hello again parents and anyone else who's reading!

Today marks day 5 of our 10 day journey in the beautiful Costa Rica. Today in our opinion would be the best day so far because it was just so jam packed!

We started the day off by waking up at 5:30 to prepare for our hike on Santa Maria. Breakfast this morning was at 6:15, rather than the usual 7:30. After breakfast we rushed into our vans to get our favorite driver, Eddie (he is the best). The drive to Santa Maria was about an hour and ten minutes long. when we arrived, we all doused ourselves in another coat of bug spray and we were on our way.

Not even 10 minutes into the hike, our tour guide, Freddy, spots spider monkeys sneaking around in the canopy above. We stood there for a solid 5 minutes observing these adorable creatures. Moments later, a fellow classmate, Grace Ewing, spotted a large stick bug. Freddy, without hesitation, grabs that stick bug and lets it crawl all over him. This is one of the many creatures he grabbed out of nowhere for us to admire. He grabbed a golden beetle ladybug, a cicada, and a cane toad that was the size of a McDonald's BigMac. After about an hour of hiking, we reach the hot springs! The water was a beautiful shade of blue and was the temperature of the perfect bathtub. Pablo went and retrieved some volcanic mud that we all put on our skins for a bit of a relaxing natural spa experience (my skin is so soft it feels like a babies bottom).

After the hike we ate lunch in the main building which supposedly two of our US presidents had studied there! For lunch we had ham and cheese sandwiches with a side of potato chips and some delicious tropical juice.

Once we got back to Finca, we were in a rush to get to class on time. Class was at 2 and we arrived at 1:40, but everyone smelled like hard boiled eggs from the sulfur in the hot springs. Everyone hurries to get rinsed off and get to class on time just to find out that they had changed the class time to 2:15.

In class all we did was start our experiments in our groups and basically got set up.

At 5:30, it was time to get in the vans again to go to cooking class! We drove only about 12 minutes to get to this one woman's house where we helped cook dinner. Dinner consisted of rice and beans, vegetables, caribbean chicken, queso, and handmade tortillas. Which tasted sooooo good. After dinner Jack Parker and Svana Torisson both offered to help clean up after dinner and help with dessert. We had ice cream for dessert which was also delicious it was strawberry vanilla lime flavored and we couldn't get enough if it. After the ice cream we thanked the woman and took many pictures with her.

We drive back to the ranch to come to write this blog but before we did, Hannah Bodmer was holding a very large rhinoceros beetle. And then in almost the blink of an eye, we find another and we call her right over. Hannah, also without hesitation, grabs the beetle and has been holding both of them for the majority of the night.

We're excited for the day we have tomorrow where we get to ride horses up the mountains.

Sincerely,
 Laurel Rau and Svana Torisson
